Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta Genova

Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta Genova

The basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, imposing on the steep hill of Carignano, is one of the greatest examples of Renaissance architecture of Genoa. The beautiful church was planned in 1522 and the works for its realization went on approximately two centuries. Today it has five domes and two bell towers flank the wide facade, crowned with an tympanum. Inside it accommodates various sculptures by Pierre Puget and various paintings of Giulio Cesare Procaccini, Guercino and Carlo Maratta. Noteworthy is the huge organ - of which it remains only the monumental facade - work realized between 1656 and the 1660 by the Dutch Jesuit Herman Willem. According to a legend, Domenico Sauli, a descendant of the family that was the client of the church, in order to improve the sound of the bells, in the 1737 fuse them with the metal of many bags full of silver coins.
